A Propos

"Bissap is a Wolof term that refers to a species of hibiscus called Hibiscus sabdariffa. It is also known as Roselle or Guinea sorrel. This shrub typically grows between 1 and 2 meters in height. After the flowers fall, purple calyxes appear. These calyxes are the basic ingredients for preparing the famous bissap juice. This beverage is essential in many African countries such as Guinea, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Benin. It is also very popular in Egypt and Sudan, where it is called karkadé. Africans praise the properties of this variety of hibiscus, and scientific research is increasingly interested in its beneficial effects. Here are some of its benefits: Digestion and bowel movement: Hibiscus promotes digestion and bowel movement. Diuretic action: Bissap-based drinks combat water retention and are suspected to contribute to weight loss. Blood pressure reduction: Hibiscus infusions may help lower blood pressure and blood lipid levels. Antioxidants and vitamin C: The calyxes of Hibiscus sabdariffa are rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, giving bissap juice a revitalizing effect. As a beverage, Bissap is essential; you will find it in most African restaurants, on menus alongside classics like Yassa or Mafé. Bissap can also be enjoyed in other forms, such as sorbets, jams, or cocktails."
